概要 On his way from San Francisco to Ceylon, the English poet and occultist Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) visited Japan in June 1901, at which time he nearly decided to cancel his remaining itinerary to remain in Kamakura and seek initiation as a Buddhist monk. This article describes what made Crowley change his mind and continue his journey, later becoming one of the most influential and controversial figures in 20th century esoteric thought. Also explored is Crowley's impression of Japan in the context of how he tended to judge peoples and locales in his extensive travels. Moreover, using Crolwey's published writings as well as documents accessed with the help of the NPO Yokohama Yamate Archives, new insight is obtained regarding the background, inspiration, and motifs of his series of poems titled Alice: An Adultery (1903).
