概要 | The effects of low iron status and anemia in pregnant women may have specific impacts on birth outcomes. A lower pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) is correlated with lower hemoglobin levels and higher risk of gestational anemia.
This study examined the nutritional intake of pregnant women in relation to iron supplementation, which indicated iron status during pregnancy, and examined the effects of pre-pregnancy BMI on iron supplementation. We conducted a validated brief self-administered dietary history questionnaire (BDHQ) on 250 pregnant women. There was no association between iron supplementation and food group or nutrient intake during pregnancy. In contrast, there was a significant association between iron supplementation and pre-pregnancy BMI. Pregnant women with a pre-pregnancy BMI less than 21 were at higher risk of iron supplementation during pregnancy. |
