概要 Previous studies suggest that distorted body image is related to eating disorders. However, it is not clear that body image distortion occurred at the levels of perception or cognition in the brain. In this study, using PC monitors, we investigated the levels of body image distortion in Japanese female university students using two body image estimation tasks. One is a task for estimating cognitive distortion, in which participants shrink or stretch their distorted full-body photograph and adjust them to real body size. The other is a task for estimating perceptual distortion, in which participants discriminate their narrowed or widened full-body photograph instantaneously. And the relationships between body image distortion and daily eating behavior (Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire: DEBQ) and body size (weights, BMI, and %fat). The results showed that many participants had a tendency to overestimate their body image in both tasks and there were significant relationships between perceptual distortion and restrained eating behavior. These results suggest that Japanese female university students with restrained eating behavior overestimate their own body at the perceptual level.
