概要 | Issues related to manpower are matters of survival in small and resource-scarce Singapore. This is the reason why the city-state has a multi-track education system to enhance the quality of its people regardless of ability, race, gender, or other factors. And to secure the quantity of its people, the island city also has various measures to support marriage, childbirth and child-rearing, and to take in immigrants and foreign workers.
No doubt these policies have formed the foundation and push for Singapore's national building and development, they have however formed an unwavering 'tournament competition mindset'among the people. This chapter examines how such mindset is fostered through the competitive school system and extends even beyond adulthood, and thus may well be the main reason behind low fertility in Singapore. |
