概要 The 2016 conviction of artist Megumi Igarashi under Japan's obscenity law has been portrayed in the Anglosphere media as the result of misogyny by the Tokyo police and courts. This article argues that, while Igarashi's arrest is objectionable, the case is in fact centered upon a gender-neutral free speech issue, and that crucial facts about how the obscenity law is actually interpreted and enforced have been ignored by the English language media in order to wrongly frame the issue in terms of sexism.
