概要 I introduce in this paper one of the most successful classes (entitled Volunteering in English) offered at a university in Tokyo. In order to acquire the credit from the class, students are required to do more than 30 hours of volunteer work outside of class time for various NPO organisations. Volunteer work includes acting as interpreters between church volunteers and tsunami victims and translators of correspondence between Japanese fund donors and the overseas recipients (i.e., children) of those funds. Student questionnaires conducted at the end of the class in January 2012 showed development in the following four areas: 1) the students' cultural and perceptional acuities by being involved with foreign cultures, 2) their autonomy and self management, 3) their interest in their native language and knowledge about their native traditions and customs, and 4) their further interest in the L2. The survey results showed the students were able to develop cross cultural awareness even while living in Japan.
