概要 More than half-a-century ago, Albert Camus remarked, “ . . . the whole art of Kafka consists in forcing the reader to reread.” He seems, however, not to have grasped the implications of his own insight. Taking Kafka’s “In the Penal Colony” as representative, I demonstrate that the entire tale is an analogue for the process of reading and writing texts, and that it is Kafka’s analysis of the reading process which is most striking in the tale, not the myriad themes—religion, colonialism, totalitarianism, bureaucracy—that one can, without much trouble, tease out of what Kafka called “a filthy story.”
