概要 This is a survey of five texts, written between 1949 and 1983, in which the authors attempt to explicate the English article system. Because all of the explications feature additions, exceptions, and exceptions to additions the author judges them to be inadequate. That professional grammarians are unable to explain a system which Anglophone children know how to use lends credence to the idea that there is a biological basis for language.
