概要 In this analysis of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn I argue based on a close reading of the text, that, though Twain’s novel is often read as a condemnation of slavery and racism, it is in fact an attack on Christianity. I conclude by suggesting that one reason it has been misread as an attack on racism and slavery is that in our time right-thinking people all deplore those things, and we enjoy deploring them together. Taboos still exist, on the other hand, with regard to criticizing religion, and these taboos have blinded readers to Twain’s actual target.
