概要 | I argue that in The Turn of the Screw Henry James is writing less about ghostly possession than about social dispossession, the withering away of the landed aristocracy occasioned by the rise of the middle-classes, a category into which the governess-narrator of the tale, though she is loath to admit it, belongs. I suggest that, as the title of the novel alerts us, James is indeed writing about a turn. His subject is nothing less than a revolution. |
