概要 I examine the role of cats in Japanese literature, and argue that Japanese writers, working in a society that values conformity, have found cats—who appear, at least to human eyes, to be the ultimate nonconformists—to be useful “others,” and that as such felines often occupy a role similar to that occupied by characters from outside Europe and the USA in works by American and European authors.
